To save the people she loves and complete the deck, she has to let the Nightmare all the way in. The ending is a massive cliffhanger that leaves Elspeth in a state where she is no longer entirely herself, and Ravyn is left to pick up the pieces as they prepare for the final confrontation with the King and the woods itself.
